In Augusta

An Older Town, and Older Equipment With It

Augusta sits east of Wichita in Butler County, on the Whitewater River, and it is a genuinely old town by Kansas standards — it grew early and it grew again on oil, which means a good deal of its housing stock predates the era anyone was designing around central air.

That shows up in the work. Systems retrofitted into houses that were never ducted for them, returns that are undersized because there was nowhere obvious to put a bigger one, and equipment fitted to whatever the previous installer left behind. None of that is unfixable; it just means the duct is as likely to be the limiting factor as the furnace is, and it is worth measuring before anything gets replaced.

From our own work

The Part Nobody Looks At

A furnace sized correctly for the house still cannot deliver its output through returns that are too small or metal that has rusted through. Replacing a run means measuring what the system needs and fabricating to that.

  • Severely corroded sheet metal inside a floor duct opening
Inside a floor duct on an older system, corroded through at the opening.
  • New sheet-metal return-air plenum fitted into a floor opening beside a furnace
The replacement plenum, fabricated to fit rather than adapted to.
  • Sheet-metal panel laid out for fabrication on a lawn beside a white work truck
Sheet metal laid out and cut on site, beside the truck.

Duct replacement is its own category in the gallery.

Augusta questions

What Augusta Callers Ask Us

Can central air go into a house that never had it?
Usually yes, and the question is how. If there is existing ductwork it may be usable, may need modifying, or may be the reason the system would underperform. If there is none, ductless equipment avoids the problem entirely and is often the better answer in an older house where running a trunk line means losing closet space on two floors. We look at the building before recommending either.
Our system is new but the house still is not comfortable. Why?
Most often because the equipment was replaced and the distribution was not. A furnace or condenser can only deliver what the ductwork will carry, so a correctly sized new unit on undersized returns performs like a smaller one. That is measurable, and it is worth measuring before spending again.
Do you work on Augusta businesses?
Yes. Rooftop units, boilers, chillers, make-up air units, paint booths, and walk-in coolers and freezers, for maintenance and repair.
