A Town on the County Line
Mulvane sits south of Wichita and Derby, and it is the one town on our list whose limits genuinely cross a county line — part of Main Street follows the boundary between Sedgwick and Sumner. A town split between two counties is exactly where a contractor draws an arbitrary line, so it is worth saying plainly that we do not.
It was laid out in 1879 where Santa Fe rail lines met, and the older blocks near the centre still have the houses of a railroad town: heated long before anyone cooled them, and refitted since. The other end of Mulvane is newer. The Kansas Star casino opened in 2011 on land the city annexed beside the Turnpike, and that side of town has commercial kitchens, hotel rooms and rooftop equipment that run all day, every day.
We serve the whole town, whichever side of the county line the address falls on.
From our own work
What a Panel Hides While the Unit Runs
Two frames from one of our package unit repairs. The liner inside the cabinet had come apart and was shedding into the airstream while the unit went on heating and cooling as if nothing were wrong. Nobody inside the building could have seen it. A scheduled visit with the panels off is the only thing that would have.

Panel off: the blower housing, and the liner around it coming away.
The same liner once it was stripped out, laid on the grass before the panel was rebuilt.
Behind the kitchen door
One Kitchen, Four Machines
A commercial kitchen runs on four pieces of equipment that only work as well as the one beside them. Most of what goes wrong in one starts as a mismatch between two.
The hood
It takes the heat, smoke and grease off the line and throws them out through the roof, and it is the biggest air mover in the building. It is not equipment we service, but everything else in the kitchen is sized around the air it removes, so it is the first thing we ask about.
The make-up air unit
It puts back what the hood takes out, heated in winter, so the building is not refilling itself through the doors and the dining room. It is the machine a kitchen notices last and depends on most, which is why it belongs on the same maintenance schedule as the equipment people can see.
The rooftop unit
It conditions the dining room. In a building short of replacement air it also ends up conditioning the outdoor air pulled in through every gap, and it runs longer for it. A unit that never quite keeps up at the lunch rush is worth checking against the kitchen before anyone resizes it.
The walk-in
The one of the four that costs stock rather than comfort when it fails. Its condensing unit has to throw heat into the air around it, so where that unit sits — a hot kitchen, a crowded roof — decides how hard it works all summer.
Tell us what is on the roof and behind the line, and we will put the make-up air, the rooftop units and the walk-in on one maintenance schedule.

When the Furnace Stops Sharing the Flue
In a basement from the railroad-era end of town, the furnace and the water heater have often vented up the same flue for decades, and that flue was sized for the two of them together. Replace the furnace with a high-efficiency one that vents out through its own pipe, and the water heater is left alone in a flue built for more than it now puts up it.
Sometimes that is fine. Sometimes the flue is now too large to draw properly for one small appliance, and that is a combustion question, not a comfort one. We check what is left on the flue as part of the furnace job, because it is the furnace replacement that changed it.
Mulvane questions
What Mulvane Callers Ask Us
- Part of Mulvane is in Sumner County. Does that affect whether you will come out?
- No. We serve the whole town regardless of which side of the line an address falls on. Our licence is a Kansas one and the county boundary has no bearing on it.
- The dining room never cools down at lunch. Is the rooftop unit too small?
- Maybe, but that is the last thing to conclude rather than the first. A kitchen exhausting more air than its make-up air unit puts back pulls outdoor air in through every door and gap, and the rooftop unit ends up conditioning that as well. We check the unit itself and the balance against the kitchen before anyone prices a bigger one.
- Our walk-in is running warm. What should we tell you when we call?
- What it is doing: whether the compressor outside is running, whether there is ice building on the coil inside, whether the door closes onto its gasket, and how far off the temperature is. That is usually enough for us to know what we are walking into, and it is worth treating as urgent — a box that is losing temperature rarely recovers on its own.
- Our house is one of the older ones and the air conditioning was added later. Is that a problem?
- Not in itself; it is how most houses that age ended up with cooling. What is worth knowing is that cooling moves more air than heating does, so ductwork laid out for a furnace alone can hold an added air conditioner back. That is measurable, and it is worth measuring before replacing either half.
