Cowley County, and a Lot of Houses With History
Winfield is the seat of Cowley County, on the Walnut River southeast of Wichita, and it is the furthest of the communities on our list along with Arkansas City just below it. It is an older town with a college in it and a housing stock to match — a good deal of it built well before central heating and cooling were assumptions.
Work in a house like that is its own discipline. There is often no obvious route for a duct, the returns are wherever somebody could fit one, and the equipment has usually been retrofitted at least once already. The answer is sometimes a modified duct system and sometimes ductless, and the two are not interchangeable.
In an older house, the question is rarely which unit to buy. It is how the air is supposed to get around.
From our own work
The Part Nobody Looks At
A furnace sized correctly for the house still cannot deliver its output through returns that are too small or metal that has rusted through. Replacing a run means measuring what the system needs and fabricating to that.

Inside a floor duct on an older system, corroded through at the opening.
The replacement plenum, fabricated to fit rather than adapted to.
Sheet metal laid out and cut on site, beside the truck.
Duct replacement is its own category in the gallery.
Winfield questions
What Winfield Callers Ask Us
- You are based near Wichita. Do you really cover Winfield?
- Yes, it is on our published service area. It is one of the longer runs we make, so it is worth calling to sort scheduling rather than assuming a same-week slot, but the service and the rates are the same as anywhere else.
- Our house is over a century old. Can it have air conditioning without tearing it apart?
- Usually, and ductless is often why. A mini-split system needs a line set and a small penetration rather than a trunk line through the middle of the house, which makes it the common answer in a building where running ductwork would mean losing closets on two floors. Where there is existing duct worth using, we will say so instead.
- Do you do buyer inspections down here?
- Yes. The Equipment Inspection for Home Buyers is an hour on site, an assessment of the heating and cooling equipment and a written set of recommendations, for $250. On an older house it is worth more than it is on a new one.
