Established Systems and Newer Ones

Derby sits directly southeast of Wichita, and it's one of the areas we work in most often. Whether you're in an established neighborhood with equipment that's been in place a while or newer construction still under its original system, we handle repair, replacement, and maintenance — and we'll tell you honestly which one you actually need.

It is the second-largest city in Sedgwick County, strung along K-15 between south Wichita and the Arkansas River, with McConnell Air Force Base as its northern neighbour. That history is written into the equipment: Derby grew in waves, and each wave installed the systems of its decade. What we get called out to depends a great deal on which wave a street belongs to.

What Derby Houses Ask of a System

Three broad eras, three different conversations. Knowing which one a house belongs to is most of knowing what its system is up against.

  • The post-war core

The blocks that filled in while McConnell and the Boeing plant were hiring. Single-storey, compact, and originally ducted for equipment far less powerful than what sits there now. When a newer furnace is fitted to original ductwork, the limit on what it can deliver is usually the duct, not the furnace — undersized returns and long floor runs in particular. That is a measurable thing, and worth measuring before anyone buys a bigger unit.

  • The eighties and nineties build-out

Two-storey plans, attached garages, and the first generation of systems that were replaced once already. A house here is often on its second furnace and second condenser, installed years apart by different people, which is how a mismatched furnace and coil ends up in a system that never quite performs to either half’s rating.

  • Newer construction still on its original system

Builder-grade equipment installed at completion and never touched since. It usually runs fine for a long time and then arrives at the end of its service life all at once, in July. The useful question on these is not whether anything is wrong today but how much life is left, which is what a maintenance visit is for.

Not sure which of the three you are in? Tell us the age of the house and we can usually narrow it down on the phone.

Repairs, Replacements, and the Ductwork Behind Them

Photographs from our own jobs. Every era above turns into one of these sooner or later.

  • Rheem furnace installed with new flue pipe and condensate lines in a utility area
A furnace replacement, with new flue and condensate lines run to suit the equipment going in rather than the equipment coming out.
  • New outdoor condensing unit on a pad beside a white house, next to an older unit
A new condensing unit on its pad, beside the one it replaced. The pad, the line set and the disconnect all get checked against the new equipment.
  • Severely corroded sheet metal inside a floor duct opening
Inside a floor duct on an older system. Metal in this condition is not moving the air the equipment upstream of it is paying to move.
  • New sheet-metal return-air plenum fitted into a floor opening beside a furnace
The replacement, fabricated to fit the opening. The duct is the part that decides what the rest of the system can actually deliver.

One System, Both Extremes

A Derby house has to get through triple-digit afternoons in July and hard freezes in January on the same equipment, and the hail that comes with a Kansas spring lands on the half of it that sits outside. We service the heating side and the cooling side alike, because here they are the same appointment six months apart.

Derby questions

What Derby Callers Ask Us

The five that come up most on jobs in town.

Do you charge extra to come out to Derby?
No. We work out of Haysville, which is the next town west across K-15, and Derby is one of the areas we are in most often. There is no separate travel charge for it.
My house is from the sixties and still has its original ductwork. Is that a problem?
Not automatically, but it is worth looking at. Ductwork from that era was sized for the equipment of that era, and a modern furnace or condenser fitted to it can be capped by the duct rather than by its own capacity — most often by undersized returns. We measure what the system is actually moving before recommending anything, because replacing equipment that was never the limiting factor is money spent on the wrong half of the problem.
We are moving to the McConnell area and buying in Derby. Can you check the HVAC before we close?
Yes. That is our Equipment Inspection for Home Buyers: an hour on site, an assessment of the heating and cooling equipment, and a written set of recommendations, for $250. It is the same inspection whether you are buying your first house here or your fourth, and it is booked through our contact page.
Hail bent the fins on my outdoor unit. Does the whole thing need replacing?
Usually not. Flattened fins restrict airflow across the coil and make the system work harder than it should, but that is a different question from whether the unit is finished. What matters is whether the coil itself and the refrigerant circuit are intact underneath. We look at it and tell you which of the two you are dealing with before anyone talks about replacement.
Do you work on Derby businesses as well as homes?
Yes, and it is a real part of what we do. Rooftop units, walk-in coolers and freezers, make-up air units, boilers and chillers, on quarterly, semi-annual or annual maintenance schedules as well as for repair. The commercial side of the site lists all six.
